FAQ
Monthly Budget Template - Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about budgeting, savings goals, and managing your monthly finances.
Budgeting Features
How do budget targets work?
You set a target amount for each of the 17 expense categories. As you enter transactions, the template tracks actual spending against each target and shows the difference. The dashboard displays your total budget versus actual spending at a glance.
What are budget alerts?
When your actual spending exceeds the target in any category, the template highlights it visually so you can spot overspending quickly. Alerts update in real time as you add transactions.
Does the template support the 50/30/20 budget rule?
Yes. The template includes support for common budget rules including 50/30/20 (needs, wants, savings) and zero-based budgeting. You can apply these frameworks or create your own custom allocation.
How does budget vs actual tracking work on the dashboard?
The dashboard shows your planned income, expenses, and savings side by side with actual figures. Distribution charts break down where your budget is allocated and how your real spending compares to the plan.
Can I use zero-based budgeting with this template?
Yes. The template supports zero-based budgeting, where every dollar of income is assigned a purpose. You allocate your full income across expense categories and savings goals until the remaining balance reaches zero.
Savings & Goals
How does savings goal tracking work?
You create individual savings goals with target amounts. The template tracks your progress toward each goal with visual progress bars and calculates how much you have saved versus how much remains.
Can I set up multiple savings goals at the same time?
Yes. You can track several savings goals simultaneously - each with its own target amount and progress indicator. The dashboard shows overall savings progress alongside individual goal status.
What is goal validation with auto-reconciliation?
The template checks that your savings goal contributions add up correctly against your actual savings. If the numbers do not match, it flags the discrepancy so you can adjust. This keeps your goals aligned with your real finances.
How are savings targets shown on the dashboard?
The dashboard displays your total savings target alongside actual savings, with a clear visual comparison. Individual goals appear with progress tracking so you can see which goals are on track and which need attention.
Can I adjust my savings goals mid-month?
Yes. Goals are fully editable at any time. You can change target amounts, add new goals, or remove completed ones. The dashboard and progress tracking update immediately to reflect your changes.
Choosing the Right Template
What is the difference between the Monthly Budget Template and the Monthly Expense Tracker?
The Monthly Expense Tracker focuses purely on recording transactions and seeing where your money goes. The Monthly Budget Template adds planning - you set targets for each category, get alerts when overspending, and track savings goals with progress bars.
When would the Annual Budget Planner be a better fit?
The Annual Budget Planner is designed for people who want a full 12-month view with month-to-month comparisons, yearly savings rates, and long-term goal tracking. If you prefer to plan one month at a time, the Monthly Budget Template keeps things simpler.
Can I upgrade to the Annual Budget Planner later?
Yes. Each template is a separate purchase. If you start with monthly budgeting and later want the year-long view, you can purchase the Annual Budget Planner and apply what you have learned about your spending patterns.
Do you have access to my financial data?
No. The template runs entirely in your own Google Sheets account. We never see, access, or store any of your financial information. Your data stays completely private.
Is this template financial advice?
No. This is a budgeting tool, not financial advice. It provides a structure for organizing your income, expenses, and savings goals. The decisions about how to allocate your money are entirely yours.
