How to Use This Template

1

Enter your monthly income

Go to Income Targets and enter your monthly take-home pay. The 50%, 30%, and 20% dollar targets calculate automatically.

2

Log spending in Needs and Wants

As expenses occur, enter them in the Needs or Wants sheet under the appropriate category. Subtotals compare to your targets in real time.

3

Track savings contributions

Record savings and investment contributions in the Savings sheet. The 20% target comparison shows how close you are each month.

4

Review adherence over the year

At month end, enter the totals in the 12-Month Tracking sheet to build a year-long record of how each bucket performs against its target.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the 50/30/20 targets calculated?

Enter your monthly take-home income in the Income Targets sheet. The template automatically calculates 50% for Needs ($X), 30% for Wants ($X), and 20% for Savings ($X) based on your income.

What counts as a Need vs a Want?

The template categorizes Needs as housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, and transportation - expenses that are hard to avoid. Wants cover dining, entertainment, shopping, and subscriptions. Some expenses fall in a grey area, so label them based on your own situation.

What does the variance analysis show?

For each month, the variance analysis shows how many dollars over or under target each bucket is, and what percent of income went to Needs, Wants, and Savings. A month where Needs hit 58% of income shows clearly in the variance column.

How does the 12-Month Tracking work?

Enter actual totals for Needs, Wants, and Savings each month. The 12-Month Tracking sheet compares them to targets and calculates an adherence rate - how often each bucket stays within its target across the year.

Can I adjust the percentages?

The sheet labels are fixed to 50/30/20, but you can set custom income targets in the Income Targets sheet to reflect a different split if your situation calls for it.

What do I get after purchase?

You receive an Excel file (.xlsx) that works in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc. Download it immediately after purchase - no signup or account required.
