Financial Planning Template - Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about tracking net worth, managing assets and debts, and projecting your financial future.

Template Features

What does the net worth dashboard show?

The dashboard displays your total net worth - assets minus debts - along with goal tracking and a visual breakdown of your financial position. It updates automatically as you enter or update your asset and debt balances.

What asset types can I track?

The template supports 15 asset types including cash accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, vehicles, cryptocurrency, collectibles, retirement accounts, and more. You can add or remove them as you need.

What debt types are included?

Five debt categories are built in - mortgage, credit card, student loan, auto loan, and personal loan. Each tracks outstanding balance, and all debts are subtracted from assets to calculate your net worth. You can change them or add new ones as you need.

How does cash flow analysis work?

The cash flow section tracks your income, expenses, and savings rate. It shows how much money flows in and out each period, giving you a clear view of whether your net worth is growing or shrinking and at what pace.

What financial projections are available?

The template projects your financial position at 1, 3, 5, and 10+ year intervals. Projections are based on your current balances and trends, giving you a forward-looking estimate of where your finances may be heading.

Tracking & Projections

How do I update my net worth over time?

Enter updated balances for your assets and debts whenever they change - monthly, quarterly, or at whatever frequency works for you. The dashboard recalculates your net worth and goal progress automatically with each update.

How does debt payoff tracking work?

Each debt entry tracks the outstanding balance. As you make payments and update balances, the template shows your total debt decreasing over time. This feeds directly into your net worth calculation.

Can I set a net worth goal?

Yes. You can set a target net worth and the dashboard tracks your progress toward it. The goal tracking updates automatically as your asset and debt balances change.

How is savings rate calculated?

Savings rate is calculated as your savings divided by your total income, expressed as a percentage. The template derives this from your cash flow data, so it reflects your actual financial behavior.

Can I track retirement accounts and investments?

Yes. The 15 asset types include categories for retirement accounts, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. You can also rename them or add new ones. All balances contribute to your total net worth figure.

Choosing the Right Template

How is the Financial Planning template different from the budgeting templates?

The budgeting templates focus on monthly or yearly income and expense management. The Financial Planning template takes a broader view - tracking total net worth across assets and debts, analyzing cash flow, and projecting your financial position years into the future.

Can I use this alongside a budgeting template?

Yes. Many people use a budgeting template for detailed monthly spending and the Financial Planning template for the bigger picture - net worth, asset growth, debt reduction, and long-term projections. They complement each other well.

Is this template suitable for someone just starting to track finances?

It depends on what you want to focus on. If your priority is understanding daily spending, a budgeting template may be a simpler starting point. If you want to see your full financial picture - what you own, what you owe, and where you are heading - this template handles that directly.

Do you have access to my financial data?

No. The template runs entirely in your own Google Sheets account. We never see, access, or store any of your financial information. Your data stays completely private.

Is this template financial advice?

No. This is a tracking and projection tool, not financial advice. It helps you organize your assets, debts, and cash flow in one place. All financial decisions are entirely yours.
